There is a great deal of discussion
about diet these days, and thankfully, it is finally starting to
be a discussion that involves some common sense. |
 |
Human nutritionists are now
acknowledging that the amount and kind of carbohydrate in the diet
can be a major cause of obesity. There is sound scientific
reason for this, and there has been all along, even when there was
no recognition of these principles. |
 |
For years, people have been
buying AFS pet food because their dogs are so healthy when fed a
meat based formula. One reason AFS pet food is so healthy
for your dog (or cat) is because it contains low amounts of soluble
carbohydrate. Soluble carbohydrates, such as sugar, or cooked
starch, are not normal ingredients for any animal, including man. |
 |
During the many millions of
years of existence and evolution for dogs and man, there was essentially
no soluble carbohydrates until the most recent times. The
advent of crop agriculture, and the first introduction of sugars
and starches, was less than 10,000 years ago. If the history
of man and dogs was a day in length, 10,000 years would not even
be a minute. |
 |
Insulin was "invented" to take
advantage of the rare and fleeting moment when an individual might
enjoy a sudden rise in blood sugar. Insulin's job is to move
blood sugar into the cells, which most everyone appreciates. |
 |
Another equally important role
of insulin is to store excess blood sugar as body fat. Few
know this about insulin. But many dogs (and people) are worse
off because of this powerful function of the hormone insulin. |
 |
Every time blood sugar rises,
which is every time soluble carbohydrates are eaten, insulin comes
forth and does it thing, and the dog gets fatter. The problem
is that insulin simply wasn't invented for the modern times; it
is too efficient at its job, especially when we ignore its power. |
 |
But to whatever extent the
diet can be lowered in amount of soluble carbohydrates, the diet
is improved. And one way to lower carbohydrates is to increase
other components of the diet, such as fat and protein. |
 |
ASF products provide the lowest
diets you can buy in soluble carbohydrates. |
 |
AFS diets are made from natural
meats, and are very high in essential amino acids, the protein building
blocks that must be included in the diet for normal health.
There is also a secondary role for protein. Several amino
acids are known to be good sources of energy, being what is called
glucogenic, meaning they can be converted to sugar. In this
role, they slowly release sugar into the blood, but at such a rate
that insulin is never activated. |

How
can I tell if my Pet is Fat?
|
| If you can see the ribs, your pet is most likely too thin. If
you cannot see the ribs, but can feel them when petting, your pet
is more likely to be at a good weight. However, if you cannot see,
or feel those ribs, your pet is overweight. |

makes only the whole natural pet foods your
dog/cat's genetic system knows how to digest...
|
Most dogs & cats suffer from
obesity and other forms of progressive poor health, long before
pet owners realize it, because the symptoms are often gradual, rather
then abrupt, and start from the inside. |
| Dogs and cats are by nature
carnivorous animals, which means they REQUIRE REAL MEAT to survive
and stay healthy. MOST pet foods ON THE MARKET TODAY use corn,
wheat, rice and other grains as one of the MAIN ingredients, and
use glue-like compounds to hold all this grain into bite size pellets
and shapes! |
| Plus, animal fat sprayed on
the, otherwise flavorless, pellets coaxes the animal to eat it.
However, that spray-on fat not only fools the dog/cat into believing
they're eating real food, it also contributes to unhealthy weight
gain. The added weight makes us believe that the pet must be getting
enough to eat, that the food must be good for him/her and we have
succeeded in finding a good food for our pet. ON THE CONTRARY! The
pet is not healthy, and not getting the food it's body was built
to digest! Commercial pet food may look and smell like we think
it should, but sadly, that is not because it is full of the health
improving ingredients Mother Nature intended. |
| A
common practice of some veterinarians is to prescribe a pet food
or diet containing rice. Use caution, as this treatment plan can
provide deceptive results. High in carbohydrates a sickly animal
can appear to be improving as it gains weight. Weight gain, however,
is not a true indicator of improved health. Has the pet stopped
scratching or loosing its fur? Have any sore spots disappeared and
the fur return? Has the pet stopped having diarrhea or bloody stools?
Has your pet become energetic and full of life? |
| Put a dish of raw meat on the
floor next to a dish of any commercial pet food, and your pet will
let you know very quickly its instinctive and preferred choice!

| When an animal is fed unnatural
and/or synthetic ingredients, the malnutrition and allergic reactions
that occur can easily open many doors to a wide variety of unwanted
health problems! Some send us a signal -- the horrible smelling
doggy dumpsites and litter boxes, the giant globs of poop, the frequent
scratching, pacing or whining, the excessive shedding, those big
sad eyes, the snapping and growling when being touched, etc. All
those problems that can make us have second thoughts about owning
a pet--and problems or behaviors that can become the reasons for
an unnecessary trip to the pound. |

warding off and staving off minor to very serious medical problems. |
