...Nursing 12 Puppies!" ...My background is in health and fitness. My husband's background is in agronomy and physical therapy. Life is so funny. I grew up on a poultry farm and lumber mill in western Pennsylvania. I was at Penn State studying fitness (specifically behavior modification techniques to control obesity). Dan grew up in a family of athletes and police officers in Philadelphia and was at Penn State studying agronomy. I eventually got him into physical therapy and he got me into Doberman husbandry! We each returned to our roots! With our background, it has always bothered us to feed our dogs processed foods. Can you imagine your doctor telling you, "Here's some Special K. It's complete and balanced. So don't eat anything else. No apples or meat. This is totally balanced. Just Special K and water." This would and should never happen! I've always fed the "better" bagged foods, like Nutro Max and Nature's Recipe. But I've always felt guilty about it. I've also experienced 3 torsions in my male Dobermans (Avatar, his father, and his grandfather). My German friends claim torsion never happened till the feeding of grain based, processed foods. In my "C' litter (Calderon = Deanno, Chicago = Weasel, Cantilly = Lacey), I had some coat problems with 3 of the 4 boys. Deanno was nearly bald when I repossessed him. He had been on ProPlan. Weasel's coat and general health went downhill dramatically when put on ProPlan while living at a kennel for 8 weeks. I bumped into the AFS guys, Rob and Gerry, about this time (when I had debilitated Deanno and Weasel back in my hands). ...Deanno and Weasel improved greatly when on the AFS diet and are still doing great now. Weasel had been on thyroid medication (or he would lose his hair) and now he's off of it and has a nice shiny coat... I'm not a sales person. In fact, to the contrary, I hate sales pitches. But I did teach Experimental Methods for 5 semesters at UW-Madison and I believe in empiricism. When I see results, I pay attention. I also think most dog foods are processed and therefore, not the optimum diet. No human nutrition expert or doctor would redommend a 100% processed diet with no fresh food to a human. The AFS diet is a complete and balanced fresh frozen diet, developed by veterinarians and animal nutrition experts. As a matter of fact, we just found out that one of its founders is Dr. Dick Patton, who my husband had animal nutrition classes with at Penn State (a small world!). Lacey, who had a history of uterine infections, had 12 healthy puppies and she was eating AFS for 9 months prior to her whelp. There were no dead puppies and all are still alive at 5 months of age now. She never lost weight or blew her coat, although she is only a 55 pound bitch and she was nursing a dozen puppies! Her puppies were weaned on AFS and are all doing great... Tina Rendeiro
